Choosing an agent because I see their name everywhere
Common Seller Mistakes
Should a seller choose or select a real estate agent because they see this agent's name everywhere in advertising, yard signs, etc.? Great question.
Here is an analogy: Both Starbucks and McDonalds are just about everywhere on the planet (soon to be on Venus in the next few months). You probably hold opposing views between these two companies regarding their product quality, customer service, cleanliness of stores, and your overall experience.
My own professional ethics are such that I will never say a bad word about any other agent, regardless of my opinion. I feel that if a seller takes the time to really interview, assess, evaluate, compare and does their homework, they can get behind the marketing glitz, glossy brochures, and personality, and evalute an agent. Hopefully you will learn what their plan is to help you maximize your sales price, reduce your expenses, improve the condition of your home (optional), and recommend an appropriate asking price.
That said, what does that have to do with the volume or visibility of the agent? Do you actually like the quality of food at McDonalds? Or does Subway perhaps have better food? Heck, even Wendy's is better than Mickey Ds. What about drinking Starbucks coffee vs Folgers Instant Coffee? All are big-name brands. Branding, length of time in the business, and having a large sphere of influence can keep an agent in a self-propelled production environment, whether they provide quality and innovative services or not.
The short answer is: Do you homework and compare, compare, compare service offerings and make sure you understand exactly what you are paying for -- yes, you are PAYING a lot of money, so you should concretely understand what it is you are paying for, and how it will benefit your financial bottom line.
