Okay, this may seem like planning overload here, but seriously, you may end up in the home for 2 years, 5 years, or even less than 10 years. So, if you are going to improve it, making design and material selections that are in tune with buyers' desires can have a huge effect (both good or bad) when you go to sell down the road. How can you plan for this? You need to stay current with what is important to homeowners, ignoring things that change every few years, like certain designer colors, carpeting, beadboard, etc., and focus on timeless things that never seem to go out of style, such as warm wood kitchen cabinets, hardwood flooring, wainscoting, etc.
For example, hardwood floors never go out of style. You can walk into an 80 year old home with gorgeous hardwood floors that are still desirable after all these years. Can you imagine how many carpet replacements would have occurred over 80 years?
